Julius
“Tristan, you’re not leaving.”
“Please,” he whines, waving his arms around in a panic. “I’m supposed to meet someone. I owe them something, Julius. It’s important. I swear to God I’m not going to—”
“If there’s someone you need to meet, I’ll do it for you. But you’re not leaving this house.”
Tristan lets out a frustrated cross between a groan and a shriek and pulls at his hair with shaky hands. He’s covered in sweat and is pale as a ghost. He hasn’t eaten in the two days he’s been here, either.
He tries to step around me, and I block him. “You can’t fucking keep me here! I’m not one of your Goddamn prisoners!”
He pushes against my chest, and I have to resist shoving him to the floor. He tries to get around me again, and when I go to block him, his fist connects with my nose in a right hook I had no idea my little brother could manage.
I growl as I bend over and pinch the bridge of my damn near broken nose while Tristan runs around me and through the front door. I blink away water in my eyes and wipe the blood off my upper lip before going after him.
He doesn’t have his keys, those I hid along with my own in the dresser drawer of a random guest bedroom, so I know he isn’t about to actually leave. He’s as hopeless as Laney is.
I fling the door open and fly off the steps when I see him in the distance running down the driveway. He disappears past the tree line, and I sprint after him. He may not have any more of a chance than Laney, but he’s significantly less fun to catch, and I have no desire to prolong this.
He asked for my help. He’s going to get it.
I practically glide above the ground with how long and quick my strides are, and I thank fuck I’m not wearing a suit. I forgot how free it feels not to dress like a monkey.
Tristan’s white T-shirt catches my eye to my right, and I veer off the drive to chase after him into the forest. He’s weak and it’s making him slow right now. On any other given day, he’d probably be quite the challenge for me, but today I catch up to him in a matter of a minute.
I push at his back and he propels to the ground, sliding a foot before stopping. I jump on top of him and pull his arms up behind his back.
“Fucking stop!” he screams. “Please, just let me go. I have to go.” His screams turn to sobs, and he shakes underneath me. The adrenaline rushing through me slows, and I blink a few times to come back to the present.
“You need help,” I say, not sure if I’m trying to convince him or myself. He only cries harder, and it twists my eardrums to the point of pain, and I think I might crumble too. Drive him wherever he needs to go.
